Valea Viilor Fortified Church
Valea Viiilor village is situated in Sibiu County, near Medias town.
Here we can find one of the most impressive fortified churches from Transylvania. St. Peter church was built in the 13th century, being fortified and completed in the 15-16th centuries. Surrounded by a strong system of walls and towers, the church itself looks like a huge fortification with two towers.
The nave has a vaulted ceiling with a complex network of ribs, sitting on 7 pairs of columns. During the time the church suffered many changes, one of them was made around the year 1520 when the western main gate was covered and a buttress was built and with another two, all of 10 meters high, form a guarding route.
The church is surrounded by a wall that still preserves 4 of its towers. St. Peter’s church in Valea Viilor is part of UNESCO historical monuments.
