Hiking in Southern Carpathians August 2011

Day1.

Monday, 1Th of August: Arrival in Bucharest, at Otopeni airport. Transfer to Opera Hotel, welcome dinner.



Day2.

Bucharest sightseeing tour, including a walk in the old centre. Lunch break and leave towards Sibiu, stopping at Cozia Monastery on the way. Overnight stay in Sibiu, Imparatul Romanilor Hotel, dinner.


Day3.

Walking tour of Sibiu, including a visit to Brukenthal art museum, open in 1817 and the Evangelical church, built between 1320 and 1520. Lunch break. From this moment the group will split, having different accommodations for that night, meeting again the next day, at Balea Lake.

The hiking group will leave the city for a 2 hours drive to the end of a forestry road followed by another 2 hours walk to Negoiu hut. About 550 m ascent. Overnight and dinner at the hut.

The non hiking group will visit Astra Village Museum, later returning to the same accommodation in Sibiu. Drive to Sibiel, visit an interesting glass icon museum, dinner.


Day4.

The hiking group will ascend Negoiu Peak, 2535m, the second highest in Fagaras Mountains, and continue on the main ridge to Balea Lake and hut. Total time 6-7 hours walk, about 1400 m up, 870 m down. We’ll meet the others at Balea mountain hut, for accommodation and dinner.

The other group will drive from Sibiu to Cisnadioara and Cisnadie, to visit the fortified churches from those villages, further to Cartisoara and up to Transfagarasan road, to Balea Lake and hut, for dinner and overnight stay.


Day5.

The groups will have a common program, walking only in the places to visit. We'll leave Balea Lake and Fagaras Mountains behind, in order to drive for about 3 hours to Sighisoara, with optional stops on the way. Sighisoara tour including the History Museum and the Evangelical Church. Lunch break. Drive to Brasov (2 more hours) for accommodation, at Curtea Brasoveana and dinner, with folkloric show.


Day6.

Drive to Bran (1/2 hour), visit the 14th century Castle. Continue to Zarnesti, situated at the bottom of Piatra Craiului Mountains. According to the weather conditions and time, we hike in the northern part of the limestone massif, for about 5-6 hours, reaching a maximum of 1470m, at Curmatura hut. End the day back in Brasov, same accommodation. The non hiking group will return to Brasov, stopping in Rasnov for the fortress, continuing to Prejmer and Harman villages, in order to visit the fortified churches. Return in Brasov in the afternoon for overnight and dinner.


Day7.

Leave Brasov and head to Busteni. Walk towards Urlatoarea waterfall, descending to Poiana Tapului in the afternoon. Drive to Sinaia. Visit Peles Castle, built between 1875 and 1914 for Carol, the first Romanian king. Accommodation, at Anda Hotel and farewell dinner in Sinaia.


Day8.

Drive to Bucharest (2 hours) for your returning flight.
