Surdesti Church

Situated in Maramures county, near Baia Mare town, Surdesti wooden church was built in 1766, as the Cyrillic characters incised above the entrance show.

Although the church is not situated in Maramures historical area, the style is typical to Maramures wooden churches. With a tower of 54 m and a total height of 72 m, it was the highest wooden church in Europe, until a few years ago. The church has a rectangular shape and a polygonal altar, as usual. The roof has a double eaves going all around the church.

The church is one of the eight wooden churches included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
