15 days cycling and hiking inNorth–Eastern and Southern Carpathians

General Information

A tough, fully guided tour, available from mid June to mid September, starting / ending in Bucharest, on Saturday, with 12 days of mountain biking and hiking in 10 different mountain areas, situated in 3 historic regions (Bukovina, Moldavia and Transylvania) of northern, eastern and center Romania.

Cycle on the tarmac and dirt roads of Obcinile Bucovinei, Calimani, Hasmas, Fagaras and Bucegi mountains, between 70 and 130 km/day, ascending up to 1800m/day, with vehicle support when possible and walk on the marked trails of Rarau, Ceahlau, Fagaras, Piatra Craiului and Bucegi, between 5 and 10 hours/day, ascending / descending up to 1700m/day.

We’ll visit Bucharest city, Bukovina’s painted monasteries (Moldovita, Sucevita and Voronet), 3 of Transylvania’s fortified towns (Sighisoara, Sibiu and Brasov), Biertan fortified church, Bran Castle and Peles Castle.

Customizable features: starting / ending place, according to your flight / train connections, length of the trip, number of cycling of hiking days, length of the rides or hikes, wherever possible, accommodation level, meals included and cultural highlights. And wherever else you might think of, if possible to be done!

trip itinerary
Day1.
  • Arrive in Bucharest, at Henri Coanda Airport. Meet your professional English speaking tour guide and drive to the center for a sightseeing tour of the Romanian capital. Continue with a walk in the old part of the city, ending with a welcome dinner at Caru cu Bere restaurant and brewery, opened in 1879.
  • Drive to the train station for the night train, first class sleeping car to Campulung Moldovenesc.

Day2.
  • Check in, have breakfast and later drive to Voronet village. Visit the late 15th century Voronet Monastery.
  • Cycle to Vatra Moldovitei village. Stop to visit the early 16th century Moldovita Monastery and continue, with a climb over Ciumirna Pass (1100m), to Sucevita village. Visit the late 16th century Sucevita Monastery. Continue the ride back to Voronet and drive to Campulung Moldovenesc.
  • Accommodation in Campulung Moldovenesc, at Hotel Eden***
  • Cycle up to 100 km, 800m up, 800m down

Day3.
  • Hike from Campulung Moldovenesc (650m) to Rarau Summit (1650m), following one of the longest and most beautiful trails of this massif. Continue, over Giumalau Summit (1856m), to Vatra Dornei. Optional transfer from Rarau Mountain Hut to Vatra Dornei.
  • Accommodation in Vatra Dornei resort, at Hotel Bradul***
  • Walk about 8 - 9 hours, 1500m up, 1000m down or 5 hours, 1000m up

Day4.
  • Cycle in Calimani Volcanic Mountains, from Vatra Dornei (800m) to Retitis Meteorological Station (2020m). Descend to Toplita (650m) and continue, cycling over Creanga Pass (1105m), to Grinties (700m). End the ride with the last climb, to Durau Resort (800m).
  • Accommodation in Durau resort, at Hotel Bistrita*** or similar
  • Cycle up to 130 km, 1800m up, 1800m down

Day5.
  • Hike in Ceahlau Massif: from Durau (800m) go up to Toaca Peak (1900m), reach Dochia hut (1750m) and descend to Izvorul Muntelui (800m).
  • Drive through the spectacular Bicaz Gorge to Lacul Rosu.
  • Accommodation in Lacu Rosu resort, at Hotel Lacu Rosu***
  • Walk 7 - 8 hours, approx. 1200m up, 1200m down

Day6.
  • Cycle from L. Rosu (900m) to Pingarati Pass (1250m), descend to Gheorgheni (800m) and continue, over Sicas Pass (1000m), to Odorheiu Secuiesc. 1 hour drive to Sighisoara.
  • Accommodation in Sighisoara citadel, at Hotel Casa Wagner*** or similar
  • Cycle up to 80 km, 700m up, 1000m down

Day7.
  • Sighisoara sightseeing tour, including the History Museum hosted by the 14th century Clock Tower and the mid 14th century Lutheran Church on the Hill.
  • Drive towards Sibiu, stopping in Biertan to visit the 16th century fortified church.
  • Check in. Afternoon walking tour of Sibiu central area, including the 14th – 17th century fortifications, the Large Square, the Council Tower, the Small Square, the Liars Bridge and the 14th – 16th century Lutheran Church.
  • Accommodation in Sibiu, at Hotel Imparatul Romanilor***

Day8.
  • Cycle from Sibiu to Carta and further, following the Transfagarasan mountain road, up to Balea Lake (2030m), a challenge rewarded with impressive views upon Balea glacier valley.
  • Accommodation at Balea Lake Hut***
  • Cycle up to 80 km, 1750m up, 300m down

Day9.
  • Hike from Balea Lake to Negoiu Peak (2535m), following the main ridge of the highest mountain range of the country. Descend to Negoiu Hut and continue to the upper end of the forestry road (1200m). Transfer to Albota Hotel***
  • Walk about 8 – 10 hours, 750m up, 1500m down

Day10.
  • Cycle from Albota Complex (500m) to Sinca Veche, up to Poiana Marului Pass (770m), ending the ride in Bran.
  • Accommodation in Bran resort area, at Cheile Gradistei*** or similar.
  • Cycle up to 110 km, 600m up, 550m down.

Day11.
  • Visit the famous 13th century Bran Castle. Short drive to Brasov. Stop for a sightseeing tour of the old part of the town, including the remaining fortifications, the central square with the early 15th century town hall and the late 14th century Black Church. Drive to Zarnesti.
  • Hike in Piatra Craiului Mountains, from Zarnesti (750m) to Curmatura Hut (1470m).
  • Accommodation at Curmatura Mountain Hut*
  • Walk about 2 – 3 hours, 700m up

Day12.
  • Hike from Curmatura (1470) to the northern part of Piatra Craiului ridge, up to La Om summit (2238 m). Descend, through Prapastiile Zarnestilor gorges, back to Zarnesti (720m).
  • Accommodation in Zarnesti, at B&B Hora cu Brazi** or similar.
  • Walk 8 - 9 hours, approx. 1100m up, 1500m down.

Day13.
  • Transfer to Sinaia. Visit Peles Castle, former royal summer residence, built by King Carol I, between 1875 and 1914.
  • Cycle in Bucegi Mountains, from Sinaia (800m) up to Babele and the Sfinx rock formations and hut (2200m).
  • Accommodation at Babele Hut**
  • Cycle up to 20 km, 1700m up

Day14.
  • Hike from Babele (2200m) to Omu Summit (2505m) and back.
  • Cycle from Babele (2200m) down to Sinaia (800m). Check in followed by a farewell dinner at Taverna Sarbului Restaurant.
  • Accommodation in Sinaia resort, at Hotel Anda****
  • Walk about 2 – 3 hours, 300m up, 300m down.
  • Cycle up to 20 km, 1400m down.

Day15.
  • 100 km drive to Bucharest Airport for your returning flight
