15 days hiking in Northern and Eastern Carpathians

General Information

A moderate - tough, fully guided tour, available from mid June to mid October, starting / ending in Bucharest, with 12 days of hiking in 10 different mountain areas (Ciomatu, Harghita, Hasmasu Mare, Ceahlau, Rarau, Obcinile Bucovinei, Giumalau, Calimani, Gutai and Rodna), situated in 4 historic regions (Transylvania, Moldavia, Bukovina and Maramures) of center, eastern and northern Romania.

Walk on marked trails, with medium and steep slopes, between 3 and 8 hours/day, ascending / descending up to 1400m/day, reaching a maximum altitude of 2303m, on Pietrosu Summit, in Rodna Mountains.

We’ll visit Peles Castle, 3 fortified towns of Transylvania (Brasov, Cluj-Napoca and Sighisoara), Bukovina’s painted monasteries (Moldovita, Sucevita and Voronet), 3 old wooden churches of Maramures (Ieud, Barsana and Budesti) and Bucharest city.

Customizable features: starting / ending place - according to your flight / train connections, length of the trip, number of hiking days, length of the hikes - wherever possible, accommodation, meals included and the cultural highlights. And wherever else you might think of, if possible to be done!

  • Arrival in Bucharest, at Henri Coanda Airport. Meet your professional English speaking tour guide and drive to Sinaia. Check in followed by a welcome dinner, at Taverna Sarbului restaurant.
  • Accommodation in Sinaia resort, at Hotel Anda**** or similar.

  • Visit Peles Castle, former royal summer residence, built by king Carol I, from 1875 to 1914.
  • 50 km drive to Brasov. Stop for a walking tour through the old part of the city.
  • Continue another 60 km to Baile Tusnad.
  • Hike in Ciomatu Mare Massif: from Baile Tusnad (650m) go up to Ciomatu Saddle (1200m), descend to St. Ana Lake (950m), finishing the walk at St. Ana Hut (1065m).
  • Short drive to Baile Tusnad.
  • Accommodation in Baile Tusnad spa, at Hotel Fortuna*** or similar.
  • Walk 3 - 4 hours, approx. 650m up, 250m down.

  • 50km drive to Harghita resort.
  • Hike in Harghita Mountains: from Harghita resort (1350m) ascend to Harghita Madaras Summit (1800m) and descend in Racu village (900m).
  • Short drive to Izvoru Muresului resort.
  • Accommodation in Izvoru Muresului area, at Karpatia B&B*** or similar.
  • Walk 6 - 7 hours, approx 450m up, 900m down.

  • 25 km drive to Balan .
  • Hike in Hasmas Mountains: start in Balan (875m), pass the spectacular Lonely Stone, reach Hasmasu Mare Peak (1792m) and descend to Lacu Rosu (970m).
  • Accommodation in Lacu Rosu resort, at Hotel Lacu Rosu***.
  • Walk 7 - 8 hours, approx. 1100m up, 1000m down

  • 40 km drive to Izvoru Muntelui Hut.
  • Hike in Ceahlau Massif: from Izvoru Muntelui (800m) go up to Dochia Hut, climb Toaca Peak (1900m) and descend in Durau resort (780m).
  • Accommodation in Durau, at Hotel Bistrita*** or similar.
  • Walk 6 - 7 hours, approx. 1200m up, 1200m down.

  • 90 km drive to Chiril, following the beautiful Bistrita valley.
  • Hike in Rarau Massif: start in Chiril village (750m), go up to Rarau Summit (1650m) and descend in Campulung Moldovenesc (650m).
  • Accommodation for 2 nights in Campulung Moldovenesc, at Hotel Eden***.
  • Walk 7 - 8 hours, approx. 900m up, 1000m down.

  • Drive to Voronet Village, visit the late 15th century Voronet Monastery, UNESCO site.
  • Transfer to Moldovita village, visit an interesting painted eggs museum and stop in Vatra Moldovitei, to visit the early 16th century Moldovita Monastery.
  • Walk in Obcinile Bucovinei mountains, from Vatra Moldovitei(650m) towards Ciumarna Pass(1109m), with the option of ending in Ciumarna village()850m
  • Drive to the late 16th century Sucevita Monastery, UNESCO site, stop to visit it. Return to Campulung Moldovenesc in the evening.
  • Walk 2-3 hours, 300m up, 200m down or 4-5 hours, about 550m up, 100m down.

  • Short drive to Valea Putnei village.
  • Hike in Giumalau Massif, from Valea Putnei (850m) to Giumalau Summit (1856m) and descend to Vatra Dornei (850m).
  • Accommodation in Vatra Dornei resort, at Hotel Bradul*** or similar.
  • Walk 7 – 8 hours, approx. 1000m up, 1000m down.

  • 30 km drive to Gura Haitii village
  • Hike in Calimani Mountains: from Gura Haitii (1050m) go up Calimanul Cerbului (2013m) and continue towards Retitis Meteo Station (2020m).
  • Accommodation at Retitis Mountain Hut*.
  • Walk 5 - 6 hours, approx. 1150m up, 150m down.

  • Second day of hiking in Calimani Mountains: from Retitis hut (2020m) descend to Negoiu saddle (1900m), climb Pietrosul Summit (2100m), walk towards Pietrele Rosii (1700m) and descend to Gura Haitii (1050m). 60 km drive to Carlibaba village.
  • Accommodation in Carlibaba, at Cabana Zada***.
  • Walk 7 - 8 hours, approx. 300m up, 1250m down.

  • Short drive to Rotunda.
  • Hike in Rodna Mountains: from Rotunda (900m) follow the forestry road to Rotunda Pass (1270m). Go further up to Ineu Peak (2279), descend to Lala Lake (1815m) and continue on Lala Valley, to the end of the road (950m).
  • 30 km drive to Borsa, check in.
  • Accommodation for 2 nights in Borsa resort, at Hotel Cerbul** or similar.
  • Walk 7 - 8 hours, approx. 1400m up, 1350m down.

  • Short drive to Rotunda.
  • Hike in Rodna Mountains: from Rotunda (900m) follow the forestry road to Rotunda Pass (1270m). Go further up to Ineu Peak (2279), descend to Lala Lake (1815m) and continue on Lala Valley, to the end of the road (950m).

  • Drive on Iza valley, towards Neteda Pass, stopping in Ieud, Barsana and Budesti villages to visit their old wooden churches.
  • Hike in Gutai Mountains: from Neteda Pass (1040m) go up to Gutai Peak (1443m), continue to Creasta Cocosului rock formation and finish the walk in Gutai Pass (987m).
  • 3 hours drive to Cluj-Napoca.
  • Accommodation in Cluj-Napoca, at Hotel Agape**** or similar.
  • Walk 3 - 4 hours, approx. 450m up, 500m down.

  • 450 km drive to Bucharest, stopping in Sighisoara for a short sightseeing tour
  • Accommodation in Bucharest, at Hotel Opera*** or similar
  • Farewell dinner at Caru cu Bere restaurant and brewery, opened in 1879

  • Morning sightseeing tour, ending with a walk in the old part of the city
  • Drive to Henri Coanda Airport for your returning flight.
